Kristie Smith – Director
Kristie Smith is the Legal Practice Director of Meillon & Bright Legal; family lawyers in Western Australia and New South Wales.
Kristie has worked exclusively in family law since 2009 and currently provides services primarily to clients in Canberra, NSW and Western Australia.
She commenced her family law career working for the Family Law Section, Law Council of Australia, in Canberra. Kristie then started her private practice experience in one of Canberra’s leading family law firms.
A move to Perth in 2012, saw her continue private practice at one of Perth’s largest family law firms where she was exposed to all areas of family law, spending regular time as Counsel in both the Family Court of Australia, Federal Circuit Court of Australia and Family Court of Western Australia.
Kristie acts for individuals who require assistance to draft an amicable agreement reached between parties or those who can only resolve matters through a litigious path.
She has extensive experience in:
- difficult and high conflict parenting matters;
- complex financial issues;
- child support;
- spousal maintenance; and
- all areas of law resulting from a family breakdown.
Kristie has personal experience with surrogacy and is passionate about assisting and supporting others (whether the intended parents or the birth parents) through the legal pathways in achieving a successful surrogacy arrangement.
She is a member of the Legal Aid panel and volunteers at the Fremantle Community Legal Centre regularly. Kristie is also a member of the Social and Continuing Professional Development Committee of the Family Law Practitioner’s Association of Western Australia. Her professional memberships include the Family Law Section (Law Council of Australia) and the Family Law Practitioner’s Association of Western Australia.
Kristie’s research interests include the uncalculated costs on litigants; the emotional costs from family law proceedings and the support needed for children during a family breakdown.
She is passionate about giving back to her community and supports the Parkerville Children and Youth Care and the Kai Eardley Foundation.
Kristie divides her time between both offices for Meillon & Bright; North Fremantle (WA) and the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
When Kristie is away from work, she enjoys spending time with her children.
